Sociological Theories (DSC-1C)

The objective of introducing this course to students is that the classical sociological thinkers, whose work has shaped the discipline of sociology. Acquaintance with the writing of thinkers i.e., Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, Max Weber and Emile Durkheim would equip the students with theoretical insights to know, analyze and interpret the social scenario around them and would also familiarize them with the different sociological perspectives and theories. The ideas of these classical theories are discussed in the context of philosophical traditions, so as to develop a social and political understanding of the society. To provide methodological and theoretical insights to enable students to analyze society and its dynamics. To introduce students to both classical sociological theory, in addition to more recent developments in social theory along with current debates and research in different parts of the world.

Students are familiarized with social, political, economical and intellectual context’s in which sociology emerged as a distinctive discipline. To Understand the development of Sociological Thought. and understand social thoughts. Students understood history of social theory, social and political understanding of the society. Methods of Sociological Enquiry (DSC-2C)

The course is a general introduction to the methodologies of sociological research methods. It will provide the student with some elementary knowledge of the complexities and philosophical underpinnings of research.

To Introduce Students to the Nature of Scientific Method in Social Science Research. To give Students the Understanding about the quantitative and qualitative approach to Research. To enhance the Research interests and inculcate the Spirit of inquiry among students, who may be motivated to continue higher studies in Research.

Basic principles of research: the connection between theory and fact/data, the concepts of inference, control, hypothesis-testing, and measurement. Data collection methods in social research i.e.,  observation, Interwiew Schedule, Interwiew Method and  questionnaires etc.

Techniques of Social Research (SEC-1)

This course aims to enhance the skills of students to understand and use techniques employed by social scientists to investigate social phenomena. With emphasis on formulating research design, methods of data collection, and data analysis, it will provide students with some elementary knowledge on how to conduct research. The core objective of this course is to expose students to the range of quantitative and qualitative research techniques used by social scientists.

The learning outcomes of the program include: Interpret research findings (samples and populations, confidence intervals, and values). Explore descriptive statistics and learn how to describe variables (distribution shapes, frequencies, mean. median, mode, central tendencies, the dispersion of variables and standard deviation. Develop an understanding of principles of data collection, data analysis, and data visualization. Present data in tables and charts, summarize and describe numerical data. Be able to apply statistical reasoning, perform statistical analysis and interpret the results

Sociology of Environment

This course intends to train students in the specialized technique of population studies and recent trends in demographic processes.

The prime objective of studying Social Demography is to understand the students with basics of demographic processes i.e., Fertility, Mortality and Migration and other factors influencing change in population are size, composition distribution and density of population of place. At the same time impart knowledge on sources of population data and its management

Theory and Practice of Development (SEC-4)

This course aims to familiarize students with the arguments of development theory in the decades of 80s onwards and equip them with some of the methodology in development practices adopted since then. Students are being imparted to the concepts, theories and factor of Social Change to understand the contemporary socio-economic framework of development in India to address in particular the experience of social development. To Prepare the Students for professional careers in the field of development planning including Governmental and Non-governmental agencies.

Students have understood different ideas and approaches to development. They are able to explain the dynamics between developmental institutions, actors, policies, theories, approaches, and ideas and the implementation, consequences, and experiences of development. Students critically analyse the key features of developmental processes in India. They undertake a sociological examination of developmental practices in different locations, moments, and fields, and to interpret different outcomes and experiences of development.

Religion and Society(DSE-1A Option -1)

The objective behind introducing this course is that students may use the sociological imagination to apply sociological perspectives to the study of religion in society to describe cross-cultural differences in religious organizations and to explain religion as a form of social identity for individuals and groups. Compare the role of religions in current events, including social conflicts.

This course acquaints students with a sociological understanding of religion. It examines some forms of religion in India and its role in modern society. Students demonstrate respect for religious diversity, critical thinking, and collaboration by participating as active citizens in their societies and communities. They also demonstrate an understanding of key debates and the range of sociological approaches to religion and belief in modern society. Students critically apply key concepts to contemporary debates about the role of religion in the contemporary global world.

Marriage, Family and Kinship

 (DSE-1A Option -2)

This course aims to highlight and critically examine contemporary concerns in the fields of marriage, family, household and kinship. It considers theoretical issues and ethnographies with particular emphasis on diversity of practices.

Students have come to understand the institutional forms of marriage, family and kinship and its types and practices in society. In contemporary India new family and marriage patterns are emerging. Simultaneously new kinship trends are developing. Reimagining Family and is changing structures are major thrust of study to Researcher students (Scholars).

Social Stratification (DSE-2A Option -1)

Code : SOCL-A 305

The goal of this course is to introduce the basis of Social Stratification i.e., social differentiation, social inequality and hierarchy to student for their sociological study. The different forms and institutional manifestations of social stratification are explored theoretically through various research methodology. The course aims at the study of stratification theories and approaches of  Karl Marx, Max Weber Talcott Parsons, Kingsley Davis and Wilbert Moore.

The students are enabling to develop an in-depth understanding of social stratification systems like gender, caste, class, race, ethnicity and the social inequalities resulting from them. They will be able to classify the theories and approaches of stratification and define their basic characteristics. It will help them to analyze the social mobility and changing power-relations in modern world.

Gender and Sexuality (DSE-2A Option -2)

This course aims to introduce students to a basic understanding of gender by interrogating the categories of gender, sex and sexuality. The complexity of gender relations in contemporary societies are further explored by looking in the areas of work and family.

It will help the students to develop an understanding of ‘sex’, ‘sexuality’, and ‘queer’ terminologies. They will be able to identify the main agents of gender socialization and their impact on children’s and adults’ gender construction.  It provides students an understanding about how femininities and masculinities vary by race, ethnicity, class, and sexuality, and how this affects gender relations and experiences.

Students are able to understand overall situation of women under the system of Patriarchy in India, theories of gender relations, position of women in India Society.

Students understood women in Indian Society with special reference to their changing status and role. To orient the students regarding theories of gender relations, role of Biology & Culture in the determination of gender roles.

Polity and Society in India (GE-1)

This course seeks to introduce the study of Indian politics from a sociological perspective to students. This course deals with theoretical and analytical aspects of examining the interface between politics and society. The course equips students to grasp the essential historicity of political processes, political institutions and political change to facilitate an understanding of the dynamic nature of political phenomena. It helps to develop theories from different concepts of political sociology. Draw a comparative study between classical and contemporary texts in political sociology that examine the relationships between politics and society, different political power, influence of caste and religion on politics.

Students are enabled to understand that State is a part of society, must not be studied in isolation.  Help students of sociology to know some political concepts that was previously considered as solely the domain of political science. Familiarity with different theoretical and conceptual issues in political sociology and a capacity to use them to grasp political phenomena in a cross-cultural and comparative perspective. Students are able to understand the relationship between state and society in shaping politics in India both historically and analytically.

Economy and Society (GE-2)

This course introduces the students to the complex ways in which economic activity is embedded in social relations form a sociological view point. The objective of this course is to impart the knowledge regarding sociological aspects of economic processes, modes of production, globalization and global trends of development. The aim of this course is to the sociological study of  economy and society and to interpret the main approaches developing in the field of economic sociology.

Students should be known to  the theoretical approaches to the understanding of economic sociology, the economic behaviour; be able to analyze the economic actions, networks, culture and power in the Post Industrial  and information, communication and technology society.

Have a grounding in the broad Economic Sociology literature as well as the methodologies employed by economic sociologists to study economic phenomena.
